Today’s post is about a project I’ve had on my mind for probably five or six years. The time was right to do it finally. The vest is inspired by a design by Nancy McRay and published in Handwoven magazine's September/October 2009 issue. The original project, woven on a rigid heddle loom, created five sections on two different narrow warps joined to form the vest. I made several alterations to the original design to make it my own.
A combo spin combines several different fiber braids to create enough spun yardage for a larger project, say for a sweater. The braids are divided into chunks, spun in random color order, and then those singles are plied together.
Have you heard of Bohus Stickning? I had not until several months ago while I was listening to an episode of the Fruity Knitting podcast. The following week, I heard the name again when I participated in an online knitting workshop called “Virtual Tour to Sweden”. Bohus Stickning is a delightful style that I thought you might enjoy hearing about.
Those of you who have been visiting this blog for a while may remember that each year our guild, Carolina Spinners, Weavers & Knitters, has a color challenge.
Like many things about 2020, our attendance and challenge participation was not typical, however the projects themselves “knocked it out of the park”!
I’ll start this post with a little translation of the title lest you think some of the letters on my keyboard may be sticking.
I love handspun yarn! The rhythm of spinning is relaxing while the interplay of colors and textures equally imparts joy. Like many hand spinners, the result of my passion produces an abundant and ever growing handspun stash. Although these skeins are pleasing eye candy on their own merits, my practical side prods me to find a project that befits them.
A common occurence at this time of year is for bloggers to review or highlight posts from the past 12 months. I thought I’d do my own spin (pun intended) on this practice and write about projects that I completed, but never posted.

Hmmmm . . . . the unexpected expected . . . . . now that’s an oxymoron! But those words are the perfect description for the outcome of this project.
Let’s start at the beginning of the tale.
Although the postings here have been a bit quiet, I’m busy behind the scenes working on ‘Krokbragd: How to Design & Weave’. Many of you have inquired about the progress of the book, so I thought I’d give an update and share some sneak peeks.
In June's post 'ABC-Alpaca, Blending, & Color', I prepped and spun a fun, textured, alpaca/merino blend yarn. At the time, I couldn't show you the finished project because it was for a Guild challenge that wasn't yet completed. Well, the Guild members have now met and revealed their projects, so I can share what I created.
Returning to 'Alpaca - The Mini Series', we last saw this fiber after it had emerged from a lovely dip in a dye bath of madder. It's now time to card, spin and knit!
In February I wrote a post about Samples & Swatches. Today's project works perfectly for using small samples of stash fibers.
In my 2018 post, I wrote that I was starting a study of weft-faced pattern weaves following the book 'Tabby to Taqueté' by Nancy Hoskins. This book is a series of 53 lessons with a technique sampler accompanying each lesson. Sampler I is completed and I will share that later in the post.
But first, what is weft-faced weaving?
